RRCO* Definition of Reflexology:
Reflexology is a non-invasive therapeutic treatment applied to the feet and hands using finger and thumb techniques thus relieving stress and tension and improving circulation.
Reflexology is 93% effective in its application to 78 physical and mental conditions. This finding comes from a year-long analysis of 168 studies from twenty-three countries. The analysis is the focus of the newly released Evidence-Based Reflexology Series by Barbara Kunz and Kevin Kunz. The key to success with reflexology, as documented by Kunz and Kunz, is the frequency and duration with which it is applied. Evidence-Based Reflexology presents both results and how much technique application has been found to positively impact physical and mental conditions.

How Does It Work?
When the reflexes are stimulated, the body's natural electrical energy works along the nervous system to clear any blockages in the corresponding zones. A reflexology session seems to break up deposits (felt as a sandy or gritty area under the skin) which may interfere with this natural flow of the body's energy.
Manipulating specific reflexes removes stress, activating a parasympathetic response in the body to enable the disharmonies to be released by a physiological change in the body. With stress removed and circulation improved, the body is allowed to return to a state of homeostasis.
Homeostasis is the "automatic" process that the body incorporates to bring it back to the "normal" state. For example, if the blood pressure is abnormal, the kidneys will secrete the enzyme renin which is involved with blood pressure, and the hormone, erythropoietin that increases the rate of red blood cell production. Here is a colour coded similarity that describes reflexes:
Whether you’re seeking a treat or treatment, luxuriating in relaxation or addressing your health concerns, reflexology can help. The long time traditional practice has become a compliment to medicine as research has documented its effectiveness.

Research shows what
reflexology can do for you.
The proven benefits of reflexology include:

- Reduction in pain
- reduction of symptoms of health concerns
- Improvement in blood flow
- Impact on physiological measures
- Enhancement of medical care
- Compliment to cancer care

How long does it take to see results?
Research shows that a single reflexology session:
- Creates relaxation
- Reduces anxiety
- Diminishes pain
- Improves blood flow to the kidneys, intestines and feet
- Improves blood flow to parts of the brain corresponding to the reflex areas on the foot
- Decreases the heart rate and blood pressure
- Increases oxygen saturation and lowers respiratory rate.
Research shows that a series of reflexology sessions:
Improves the body overall by helping every part of it, for example:
Improving the function of the kidneys (waste product removal) red blood cell level, immune system)
- Impacting the digestive system and relieving constipation in children, women and the elderly.
- Easing difficult urination for men and incontinence in women
- Easing PMS and menopause for women and prostate problems for men
- Creating changes in physiological measurements of the pancreas.

Leading Cardiologist Dr. Oz Demonstrates Reflexology on Oprah Winfrey TV Show
Oprah Winfrey has repeatedly had preeminent Cardiologist Dr. Mehmet Oz on her TV show. Dr. Oz not only demonstrated Reflexology on Oprah, but also has mentioned Reflexology during successive appearances on her show. During one show he explained that, "Every patient that I operate on at New York Presbyterian Hospital gets a Reflexology type treatment ..." Dr. Mehmet Oz is perhaps the most accomplished and respected cardiothoracic surgeon in the United States. A graduate of University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, this remarkable doctor operates on some 400 patients a year, is a Professor of Cardiac Surgery at Columbia University, director of Cardiovascular Institute at Columbia Presbyterian, directs the Heart Assist Device Program and is the founder of the Complimentary Medicine Program.
Medical Centers Endorse Reflexology
The Springfield Newspaper, August 5, 2009
According to major medical centers in the United States, reflexology is helpful for many conditions.
Jane Lanverman, Secretary of the Reflexology Association of Ohio, has compiled a list of Medical Centers in the United States that have researched and provided health claims for reflexology as witnessed in their respective centers.
A partial list includes:
- Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine,
- St. Rita’s Medical Center,
- Dekalb Medical Center,
- Beebe Medical Center, and
- University of Pittsburg Medical Center.
These medical centers have declared reflexology to benefit such areas as: reduction in tension and stress, increased vascular, neural and lymphatic circulation, the releasing of toxins, alleviates or manages asthma, sinus problems, digestive disorders, menstrual irregularities, pain, fatigue, and inflammatory skin conditions.
Reflexology is also recognized by these medical centers as being good for relieving pain and inflammation due to arthritis (both osteo and rheumatoid) and Raynaud's phenomenon, myofascial pain, and fibromyalgia.
Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine states that research has shown that blood pressure can actually decrease during a session.
A three-month pilot study was conducted by St. Rita's Medical Center on open-heart patients who received reflexology. The study confirmed a patient's level of pain and anxiety decreased significantly.
It helped patients increase the distance they were able to walk, decreased the number of days they were hospitalized and the amount of medication administered during their recovery process.
As you can see there is a wide range of conditions that major medical centers are recognizing as being benefited by reflexology. And more than one condition can be addressed during the same session. Reflexology can assist and compliment any health care regimen.
